January 24 | Avant-Garde for Good
Over the last couple years this typeface has been hard to avoid. Endless bands, brands, and clubs have leaned on this stylish font for their various image needs. I'm not qualified to make a scathing critique of the retro-cycle, or the perceived misuse of the typeface greats. All I can say is that it's pretty refreshing to come across a well-used typeface from within it's own era, in this case a flight manual from 1973.
January 14 | Secret Alphabet
Bold, rounded, condensed, stout, and 3D. What it's not is available for download or purchase. This plaster-molded type set was rescued from a bingo-night marquee or perhaps a skate-rental sign at an ice rink somewhere. I'd love to reincarnate this typeface digitally; I'm surprised I haven't come across an exact copy yet.
